Description
Pigeon grit is a mixture of small, hard particles that pigeons (and other birds) consume to help them digest their food. Unlike humans, birds don’t have teeth to break down their food. Instead, they rely on grit—typically small pieces of sand, gravel, or crushed shells—to help grind up their food in their muscular stomach (the gizzard). This helps them break down seeds, grains, and other tough food items they eat.
In captivity, pigeon grit is often provided to pet pigeons to ensure they can digest their food properly. It’s available in pet stores, usually in the form of small, granular substances. Some pigeon grit also contains minerals, such as calcium, to promote healthy bones and egg production in breeding birds.
